Know someone who'd love this?

Ever felt like your blog was just a place to chuck up some words on a page, a place to pour out your thoughts without an audience? I definitely have.

But what if I told you that those late-night ramblings, your musings on vintage teapots or the philosophy of sock puppet theater, could actually make money for you?

It may sound unbelievable, but turning a passion into a profitable venture is absolutely possible in the world of blogging.

How to Monetize Blogging

It’s a common theme… a person loves sock puppets but still hasn’t figured out how to monetize blogging in a way that will pay them for their love… welcome to this article on how to turn your blog into cold hard cashola.

From setting up your blog for success to learning the advanced techniques used by top-earning bloggers, I have your back…

So grab your favorite drink (coffee I hope), get comfortable, and let’s explore the world of blog monetization.

Who knows…

By the end of this, you might be well on your way to quitting your day job and embracing the freelance blogger lifestyle full-time.

Let’s get started…

Understanding Blog Monetization

Blog monetization is all about leveraging your blog’s content and audience to generate income. Everything, well pretty much everything on your entire website can lead to income.

It’s about realizing your passion project can become a sustainable online business.

different ways to monetize your blog

But… monetization isn’t just about slapping some ads on your site and hoping for the best. It’s a strategic approach that involves understanding your target audience, delivering value, and finding the right ways to generate revenue without compromising who you are and what you want to achieve.

If you write naturally and love it, then while building your blog out to make money from it, you can also become a freelance writer to supplement your income while you start the monetization process.

Why should you consider monetizing your blog?

Well, apart from the obvious thing of making money doing something you love, there are several awesome reasons:

  1. Financial Freedom: A successfully monetized blog can provide a steady income stream, giving you the freedom to work how you want and where you want. Currently, I’m in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Location freedom with blogging

  1. Reinvestment Opportunities: The money you earn can be reinvested into improving your blog, whether that’s creating your own products, using better tools, professional web design, or paid promotion. Think – how do I get more readers to my blog.

  2. Motivation: Let’s face it, knowing your hard work is paying off and you are driving traffic can be a huge motivator to keep creating great content.

  3. Value Addition: Many make-money strategies, like creating products or offering services, can add value to your readers’ lives… real people, who you can help.

But hold up on the dreams of yachts and private islands just yet, let’s set some realistic expectations.

This takes time, effort, and patience.

It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme. That’s not to say you can’t make money quickly though. It’s to say that, most successful bloggers spend months, if not years, building their audience and refining their monetization strategy before seeing significant returns.

Laying the Groundwork for Monetization

Now that you understand how to make money with your blog and why it’s worth going after, let’s talk about laying the foundation for a successful, money-making blog.

After all, you can’t make money from thin air – you need a solid base to build upon.

Building Your Own Blog into a Winner

The first step in monetizing your own blog is, well, having a blog worth monetizing. This means creating a website that not only looks professional but also provides real valuable content to your readers. Here are a few key elements:

  1. Choose the Right Niche: Your blog’s niche should focus on a specific topic or area of expertise.

Web Design Matters: Your blog should be visually appealing and easy to navigate.

  2. Consistent, Quality Content: This is the heart of your blog. Consistent publishing of well-written, informative posts will lead to engaged readers.

  3. SEO Optimization: Make sure your content is optimized for search engines. This will help you attract organic traffic over time.

Now let’s get into how we can start making money blogging…

Advertising Networks: A Classic Approach

Ah, advertising – the OG of blog monetization and everyone’s favorite easy business model. When most people think about making money from a blog, this is often the first method that comes to mind.

And for good reason – it’s relatively easy to set up and you can make passive income with your blog once it starts gaining traction.

So, how does it work? Essentially, you write posts and allow companies to display their ads on your blog through an advertising network, and in return, you get paid.

how google adsense looks on your blog

The amount you earn can depend on various factors, including how much traffic you get, the number of views or clicks the ads receive, and the type of ads you’re displaying.

Let’s talk about one of the most popular advertising networks out there: Google AdSense.

Google AdSense: The Big Player

Google AdSense is probably the most well-known ad network, and it’s often the first port of call for many bloggers looking to make money. Here’s why it’s so popular:

1. Easy to Set Up: You don’t need to be a tech wizard to get started with AdSense.

2. Variety of Ad Formats: From display ads to in-article ads, AdSense offers different formats to suit your blog’s layout.

3. Relevant Ads: AdSense uses contextual targeting to display targeted ads, that are relevant to your content, which can improve click-through rates.

4. Reliable Payments: Being Google, you can trust that you’ll get paid on time.

But AdSense isn’t the only player in town. There are several other ad networks worth considering, such as Media.net, Adsterra, and Mediavine. Each has its own requirements and benefits, so it’s worth doing your research to find the best fit for your blog.

Pros and Cons of Display Advertising

Like any make monetization strategy, display advertising has its ups and downs. Let’s break them down:

Pros

  • Passive Income: Once set up, ads can earn money without much additional effort on your part.
  • Easy to Implement: Most ad networks provide code snippets that you can easily add to your blog and they will appear inside your blog content.
  • Diverse Ad Options: From banner ads to native ads, social bars to pop-unders, there are various formats to choose from.

Cons

  • Can Affect User Experience: Too many ads can make your website traffic blog look cluttered and slow download times.
  • Lower Income for New Blogs: You need significant traffic to make substantial money from ads, so you might consider other services first.
  • Limited Control: You often can’t control which specific ads appear on your site, and I’ve seen some other sites showing crazy inappropriate ads, so be aware.

How Many Views Do You Need to Monetize a Blog Through Ads?

This is a question I get asked a lot, and the answer is: it depends.

Different ad networks have different traffic requirements. For instance, Google AdSense doesn’t have a minimum traffic requirement, but it does have requirements. So, check them out here.

It is a good choice for new bloggers, although to make any significant income, you’ll generally need at least 10,000 page views per month… and this can be helpful obviously if you have access to a good social media following to start with.

Other networks like Mediavine require a minimum of 50,000 sessions per month, while AdThrive looks for 100,000 pageviews per month.

example of display ad format on adsterra - social bar

The guys over at Adsterra are pretty easy to get started with have no minimum requirements for traffic and are super easy to set up the ad space on your site.

Also one of the things I like about these guys is that you can get the traffic from most places, so if you are a social media management aficionado then you can get traffic from there too… love it!

You can check out Adsterra here: joinadsterra.com/

Also… don’t let big traffic numbers discourage you. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a successful blog.

So, let’s get onto the next way to earn money with your blog.

Affiliate Marketing: Earning Through Recommendations

So, you’re chatting with a mate about your latest hobby – let’s say it’s urban gardening. You love your new self-watering planter you bought, and how your tiny balcony looks like a thriving oasis.

Your mate wants to buy one too.

Now, imagine if you got a small commission every time this happened.

HOW AFFILIATE MARKETING WORKS

That pretty much is affiliate marketing.

By popping your affiliate links into your blog post, you can share your experiences and recommendations while earning commissions.

Understanding Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is an income strategy where you earn a commission by promoting other companies’ products or services in your blog content. You share a special link (known as an affiliate link) to a product, and if someone makes a purchase through that link, you earn a percentage of the sale.

Choosing the Right Affiliate Programs

Not all blog affiliate programs are created equal. Here are some factors to consider when choosing affiliate programs:

1. Relevance: The products should be relevant to your niche, the blog post you are creating, and your target audience.

2. Commission Rates: Higher commission rates mean you make more money.

3. Cookie Duration: This is how long the affiliate link remains active after a user clicks it.

4. Payment Terms: How and when you’ll get paid.

5. Product Quality: Only promote products you genuinely believe in.

Some popular affiliate programs include Clickbank, DigiStore24, Amazon Associates, ShareASale, and CJ Affiliate. Many companies also run their own affiliate programs, especially in niches like software and online courses.

Amazon Associates and Other Popular Programs

Amazon’s affiliate program gives you a special Amazon affiliate link and is often the go-to for many bloggers.

amazon associates affiliate program

It’s easy to use, has vast digital and physical products to choose from, and people trust Amazon. But… their commission rates kind of suck, and tend to be lower than some other programs.

Other popular affiliate programs include:

1. ShareASale: Offers a wide variety of merchants across different niches.

2. CJ Affiliate: Known for high-quality advertisers and good analytics.

3. ClickBank: Great for digital products like ebooks and e-learning courses.

4. Awin: Popular in Europe with a growing presence in the US. It is among one of the first networks I became successful way back in 2009.

Remember, you’re not limited to just one program. I use a combination of affiliate programs to maximize earnings.

Next up, let’s look at another popular way to make money that allows you to work directly with brands: sponsored content.

Content: Partnering with Brands

Imagine getting paid to blog about products or services you love.

Sounds pretty cool, right?

Well, that’s what sponsored content is all about.

It’s a form of native advertising where brands pay you to create and write sponsored posts or content featuring their products or services. To create sponsored content effectively, you need to partner with brands, reach out to them, and ensure that you disclose sponsored content correctly.

What is Sponsored Content?

This could be a product review, a how-to guide using the brand’s product, or even just a mention of the brand within a larger piece of content. The key is that these sponsored posts are created specifically for that brand, and you’re compensated for it.

Creating Effective Sponsored Posts

Once you’ve landed a sponsorship, the key is to create content that serves both the brand and your audience. Here are some tips:

1. Other Blogs: Look at how other bloggers do sponsored posts to get a good idea.

2. Stay Authentic: Only work with brands that align with your blog’s values and your audience’s interests.

3. Be Transparent: Always disclose that the content is sponsored. It’s not just ethical, it’s often legally required.

4. Provide Value: Your sponsored content should be just as helpful and engaging as your regular content.

5. Follow Brand Guidelines: While maintaining your voice, make sure to adhere to any guidelines provided by the brand.

6. Go Above and Beyond: Exceed the brand’s expectations. This can lead to long-term partnerships and referrals to other brands.

Selling Digital Products

The next beast we look at on your make-money journey is a strategy that has awesome potential: sell digital products. I love this because you can really set your own prices based on what you are worth.

This is where you can start to leverage your expertise and creativity to create additional income streams. Selling digital products, such as templates, ebooks, and courses, is often easier compared to physical items.

selling digital products like ebooks on a blog

Utilizing e-commerce platforms and marketplaces can significantly enhance your ability to successfully monetize your blog through digital product sales.

Types of Digi Products

1. Sell eBooks: From step-by-step guides to short, focused reports.

2. Templates: Design templates, writing templates, planning sheets – anything that helps your audience save time.

3. Printables: Calendars, planners, worksheets, and more.

4. Digital Art: If you’re artistically inclined, you could sell digital prints or designs.

5. Software or Apps: For the tech-savvy blogger.

6. Audio Content: Podcasts, guided meditations, or music.

Creating and Marketing Your Products

Creating a digital product might seem daunting, but it’s often simpler than you think. Here’s a basic roadmap:

1. Identify a Need: What problems do your readers face? What questions do they frequently ask?

2. Develop Your Product: Focus on providing real value. Quality matters more than length or complexity.

3. Set Up a Sales System: You’ll need a way to deliver your product and process payments. Platforms like Gumroad or SendOwl can simplify this process.

4. Create a Marketing Plan: Use your blog, email marketing list, and social media platforms to promote your product.

5. Gather Feedback: Use early customer feedback to improve your product and inform future creations.

Digital Courses: Sharing Your Expertise

Now we have online training…

If you’ve built a blog around your expertise, you are getting great traffic, be it from the search engines of email marketing activities, then creating an online course is a natural next step to make more money with your knowledge and writing skills.

Why Sell Online Courses?

Online classes offer several advantages:

1. High-Value Product: Selling courses often allows you to ask for higher prices than e-books or other digital products.

2. Deeper Engagement: Courses allow you to keep your audience engaged so much more and connect with them on a deeper level.

3. Establish Authority: Creating a course cements your position as an expert in your field.

4. Scalable Income: Once created, you can sell your course to an unlimited number of students.

Platforms for Hosting Online Courses

There are numerous platforms available for hosting your online course. Some popular options include:

1. Teachable: User-friendly platform with robust features.

2. Thinkific: Offers a free plan to get started.

3. Udemy: Provides access to a large marketplace of potential students.

4. Your Own Website: For more control, you can host the course on your own site using a learning management system (LMS) plugin. I host my own training courses.

Platforms for Hosting Online Courses

Each platform has its pros and cons, so research carefully to find the best fit for your needs.

Membership Sites and Premium Content

Next, we have membership sites and premium content.

This approach involves offering exclusive written content, videos, training, etc, or benefits to paying subscribers, creating a sense of community, and providing ongoing value to your most dedicated readers. It’s an extra cool way to make money blogging.

Building a Members-Only Site

A subscription site is a gated section of your blog where only paying members can access exclusive content or features. Here’s how to get started:

Building a Members Only Site

1. Define Your Offer: What value will members receive? This could be exclusive articles, videos, forums, or personalized advice.

2. Choose a Platform: Many WordPress plugins like MemberPress or Paid Memberships Pro can help you set up a subscription site.

3. Set Up Payment Processing: You’ll need a way to handle recurring payments. Services like Stripe or PayPal can integrate with most membership platforms.

4. Create Content: Develop a serious content creation strategy to ensure you’re consistently delivering value to your members.

5. Launch and Promote: Use your existing audience engagement here as a launchpad for your membership site.

Types of Subscriber-Only Content

The key to a successful membership site is offering content that your audience can’t get anywhere else. Some ideas include:

1. In-Depth Articles or Guides

2. Exclusive Videos or Podcasts

3. Live Q&A Sessions

4. Member-only forums or Community

5. Early Access to New Content

6. Personalized Advice or Coaching

Coaching and Consulting Services

Our next blog monetization strategies allow you to directly leverage your expertise: coaching and consulting services.

This business model can be cool, both financially and personally, as it allows you to work closely with clients and make a real difference in their lives or businesses.

For me as an introvert, it’s super tiring…I love it, but it does wear me down.

So how does it work?

Let’s say you run a fashion blog and you offer personalized coaching and consultations to help your audience enhance their personal style, showcasing a potential revenue stream based on your expertise and blog niche. One of my favorites in this niche is Drew Joiner.

Leveraging Your Blog to Offer Services

Your blog serves as a powerful platform to showcase your knowledge and attract potential coaching or consulting clients. Here’s how to leverage it effectively:

1. Demonstrate Expertise: Use your blog posts to show in-depth knowledge of your niche.

2. Share Success Stories: If possible, feature case studies or testimonials from people you’ve helped.

3. Offer Value: Provide actionable advice in your posts to give readers a taste of what working with you might be like.

4. Create a Services Page: Clearly outline what you offer, who it’s for, and how to get started.

Setting Up Coaching or Consulting Packages

When structuring your services, consider offering different options to cater to various needs and budgets:

1. One-Time Sessions: Great for clients who need help with a specific issue. I do a lot of one-time sessions, and many of them turn into multiple coaching runs.

example of Coaching or Consulting Packages

2. Package Deals: A set number of sessions over a defined period, often at a discounted rate.

3. Ongoing Retainer: For clients who need regular support.

4. Group Coaching: A more affordable option that allows you to help multiple clients at once.

Be clear about what each option includes, such as session length, communication methods (e.g., video call, email support), and any additional resources provided.

Managing Client Relationships

Successful coaching and consulting is as much about relationship management as it is about your expertise. Here are some tips:

1. Set Clear Expectations: Be upfront about what clients can expect from working with you.

2. Maintain Boundaries: Establish clear working hours and communication channels.

3. Follow-Up: Check in with clients between sessions to see how they’re progressing.

4. Seek Feedback: Regularly ask for feedback to improve your services.

5. Overdeliver: Go above and beyond to ensure client satisfaction and encourage referrals.

Remember that the most successful bloggers often combine multiple strategies.

Coaching and consulting can work well alongside other methods like online courses, products, or membership sites, creating a comprehensive approach to making money with your blog.

My Final Thoughts

We’ve looked at some cool make-money strategies from classic advertising to personalized coaching services. As we wrap up, I want to leave you with some final thoughts.

Monetizing a blog isn’t just about the ability to make money – it’s about creating value. Your primary focus should always be on serving your audience. The money follows when you consistently provide value.

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Experiment, analyze, and adapt. Don’t be afraid to try different strategies, and don’t get discouraged if something doesn’t work right away. Building a profitable blog takes time and persistence.

Always keep your audience at the forefront. Be transparent about your monetization efforts. Your readers will appreciate your honesty, and it will help maintain trust.

Don’t forget the importance of diversification. Relying on a single income stream can be risky. By combining multiple monetization methods, such as selling ad space, you can create a more stable income from your blog.

Lastly, remember why you started blogging. While making money is great, don’t let it overshadow your passion for your topic and your desire to connect with your audience. The most successful monetized blogs are those that maintain their authenticity and continue to provide value to their readers.

Now, I’d love to hear from you. Which of these monetization strategies are you most excited to try? Or if you’re already monetizing your blog, what’s been your most successful method? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. Let’s learn from each other and grow our blogs together!
