I love blogging, and I hope you will too.
Picture for a moment, a digital realm where your thoughts, experiences, and knowledge can flow as freely as a bird, reaching a global audience who value your unique perspective…
It can happen!
Imagine your words inspiring hundreds of people, then thousands, and possibly even millions, sparking conversations, and even generating an awesome and sustainable income. This is the beauty and power of blogging…
A medium that has revolutionized communication in our digitally interconnected world.
Blogging has evolved into an essential tool for personal expression, professional growth, and business expansion. My experience covers all three of these, outlets for income creation and creativity.
So, whether you’re a budding writer, an ambitious entrepreneur, or a seasoned business owner seeking to broaden your horizons,
Understanding how to make money with blogging and mastering all its strategies can open doors to a world of opportunities.
This is what is called… A blog post. It’s easy-to-read, and explores the world of blogging, unraveling what it is, why we do it, and even practical steps to launch your first blog here, and much more.
1. What is Blogging?
Blogging, at its core, involves the creation and publishing of content on the internet, typically in the form of articles and posts on a dedicated blog.
A blog post is a piece of content that is placed on a ‘blog website’ and this content is frequently updated and organized chronologically, often covering a specific subtopic of the overall blog. As you can see here is a list of blog posts from my personal website that I am closing down to focus on the growth of this site for blogging training.
A blog itself is a unique type of website or a specific section within a website that is regularly updated with fresh, engaging content. As you can see, lots of posts, are updated more than weekly.
This content often uses an informal or conversational tone, making it accessible and relatable to a broad audience. Think about it, no one wants to read boring drivel… do you?
You’ll notice how I write here, I try not to overcomplicate things, add some humor, and steer clear of the over formalities.
History of Blogging
The roots of blogging can be traced back to the late 1990s when individuals began sharing their personal diaries and musings online. As you can see from my website here, the Blog Profit Path keeps that original blog theme from the early 90s. Let me know what you think of it below…
As the internet matured, so too did blogging, and evolved into a powerful platform for sharing information, cultivating communities, and earning an income (which is the type of blogging I teach).
When Blogging Became Easier
When user-friendly platforms for blogging appeared like Blogger and WordPress, it really made the whole process of blog creation so much easier, helping pretty much anyone with an internet connection to share their voice with the world.
Content management systems (CMS) like WordPress and Blogger play a really important role in making blog creation open to most people, allowing people like us to manage and publish content without the hassle of techy and formatting issues.
The image above is actually the first ever WordPress website online from way back in 2003, I picked up the image from the Wayback Machine.
This ease of use and cool platforms fueled an explosion of blogs across pretty much every niche and industry imaginable, transforming the digital world.
Blog vs. Website
While a website normally serves as a static collection of web pages providing information about a business or organization, a typical blog is ever-changing, which is why people love them so much…
It’s got regularly updated content.
If you look at this blog what you will see is common components such as page navigation… which contains the logo and navigation bar.
Then you have the headers of each blog post you create like shown here…
Main content areas, sidebars, and footers… these are here to enhance user experience and if you want, areas you can customize.
A good blog often dives into specific topics or themes, which encourages engagement and interaction with readers through features like comment sections and even sometimes discussion forums.
This type of layout and format of the blog itself creates a sense of community and connection, distinguishing many blogs from traditional websites. And as you can see with this here, you can add a touch of your own personality to what you do… which is so important in my opinion.
2. Why People Blog
Personal Reasons
As I said above, I love blogging. Blogging appeals to so many people, for so many personal reasons, most blogs are a platform for:
Self-expression: Blogs provide a canvas for people to share their thoughts, opinions, and experiences, creating a sense of connection with like-minded individuals who resonate with their unique perspectives.
Hobbies and Interests: Many bloggers share their hobbies and interests, such as travel, cooking, fashion, or gaming. This allows them to connect with a community of people who share their enthusiasm for their niche, exchange ideas, and celebrate their shared passions.
Personal Growth: The discipline of writing regularly can lead to significant personal growth also, enhancing communication skills, boosting self-confidence, and fostering a sense of accomplishment. Blogging as you are starting to understand it now is only the start, and blog content is one of the many ways you will learn to express yourself.
I’m a big fan of the Smitten Kitchen blog by Deb Perelman which started out just as a small blog to share her love of cooking, its grown into something quite remarkable.
Professional Reasons
From a professional standpoint, business blogs offer a load of benefits:
Establishing Authority: Consistently sharing valuable insights and expertise on a specific subject can position a blogger as a thought leader and authority in their field. This can attract opportunities for collaboration, speaking engagements, and career advancement.
Business Growth: Businesses use blogs as powerful marketing tools to attract potential customers, improve their visibility in search engine results, and foster brand loyalty by providing valuable fresh content that educates and engages their target audience. Creating engaging, industry-relevant blog content is so important for attracting website traffic and implementing effective SEO tactics.
Networking Opportunities: A Business Blog can open doors to connect with other professionals, influencers, and potential clients, leading to collaborations, partnerships, and valuable business relationships.
I’m also a big fan of Seth’s Blog, a daily blog on marketing, leadership, and personal development. Seth Godin is a well-known figure in the marketing world, and his blog is a must-read for professionals in various industries.
Case Studies of Successful Bloggers
There are so many inspiring stories of successful bloggers that really do show the immense potential of creating your own blog.
Think about the journey of Pat Flynn, who transformed his blog, Smart Passive Income, into a multi-million dollar online business.
Or how about Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman, who leveraged her blog to build a thriving career in media and publishing.
Or even myself, Ciaran Doyle who has used blogging to create multiple 6 figure businesses in the affiliate blogging arena.
These examples demonstrate that with dedication, creativity, and strategic execution, blogging can kickstart both your personal and professional success.
3. How to Start a Blog
Choosing a Niche
The first and probably the most important step in starting your blogging journey is picking a niche – a specific topic or area of interest that will define the focus of your content.
Choosing a niche allows you to target a specific audience, establish yourself as an expert, and tailor your content to their needs and interests.
Think about…
- What 3 topics do you love?
- What 3 skills are you awesome at?
- What 3 problems have you solved in your life that you could help others with?
Then write them down and pick the one that resonates most with you.
Passions Are A Great Opportunity
Think about your passions, areas of expertise, and the potential market demand when making this important decision.
You want to choose a niche that will make it easy for you to create new blog posts time and again, so something you love is best in my opinion.
After you have chosen your blog focus the next step is choosing which blogging software you are going to use to start blogging.
Selecting a Blogging Platform and Content Management System
There are many popular blogging platforms that cater to different needs and levels of expertise. I have my favorites, here are some:
WordPress: This is the daddy! A versatile and highly customizable platform that offers a wide range of themes, plugins, and features, making it (the best choice in my opinion) for both beginners and experienced bloggers.
Blogger: A user-friendly platform owned by Google, ideal for beginners who want a simple and straightforward way to start blogging. Not so great as it doesn’t really rank on the search engines, which means not many visitors.
Medium: This is a great platform, but one to be used alongside using WordPress. It’s minimalist, and emphasizes content and community building, making it a great option for writers who prioritize quality content and engagement. I use this to share my content to reach a wider audience and bring people back to my own blogs.
I build all my blogs on WordPress.org. Not WordPress.com which is a free platform. WordPress.org is super powerful and runs about 60% of the websites/blogs online today.
Here is a quick look at what the back end of my WordPress website looks like for this website the Blog Profit Path. While it might look confusing, it’s really easy once you have played around with it for a few hours.
Domain Registration and Hosting Setup
Once you’ve chosen your preferred platform (WordPress), it’s time to register a domain name and get your hosting.
This is a unique address that will identify your blog on the internet. The domain name for this blog is:
blogprofitpath.com.
Where Your Blog Lives
Hosting is where your blog files sit. It’s what holds all of your blog so that when people search on Google or Bing it appears and people can go and look at it.
Selecting the right hosting service for your blog site is super important for the performance, security, and overall accessibility of your blog.
Most good hosting companies offer extra freebies like a free domain name, WordPress 1-click-installs, a website builder, and a whole host of other tools to get your blog site online.
Quality Hosting For Beginners
I think Dreamhost Hosting company is a good option for beginner bloggers.
While some hosting platforms offer free hosting options, DO NOT Get these, they suck! So, investing in a custom domain and reliable hosting plan is essential and will enhance your blog’s professionalism and performance.
Designing Your Blog
How your blog looks is also a super important thing. The visual appeal and user experience of your blog are so important for attracting and retaining readers.
Choose a clean, pleasing theme or template that complements your niche and brand identity.
Themes and Templates
WordPress has so many cool themes and templates that you can use for your blog so you don’t even need to hire a web design company.
Inside the theme, you can customize the layout, color scheme, fonts, and other web design elements to create a visually cool and engaging user-friendly blog that reflects your unique style and personality.
4. Writing and Publishing Blog Post Content
Understanding Your Audience
Create blog posts that resonate with your readers. This is what it is all about, so you need a deep understanding of your target audience.
You need to conduct thorough research to identify their demographics, interests, pain points, and preferences.
You can then create detailed target market personas to help guide your content strategy and ensure that each and every blog post addresses their specific needs and desires.
The beauty of the world we live in now is that AI can help with this, never have we lived in such a time where AI can give us so much information at the touch of a button. I used AI to help create this buyer persona above.
Creating Engaging Blog Posts
To create reader engagement and keep them coming back for more:
Craft compelling headlines: Your blog post headlines should be attention-grabbing, and informative, and entice readers to click through to your post.
Write captivating introductions: Hook your readers from the first sentence with an intriguing question, a surprising fact, or a relatable anecdote. Writing blog posts is an easier way to establish authority and expertise within your industry.
Use a clear and logical structure: Organize your blog post content into sections with subheadings, bullet points, and short paragraphs to help make it easier to read and scan.
Pop in some visuals: Use images, videos, and infographics to break up text, illustrate key points, and make your content more visually appealing and engaging. You know that old saying… “a picture paints a thousand words”… remember this!
Finish off with a strong call to action: At the end of your blog post ask readers to comment, share your post, subscribe to your blog, or take a specific action related to your content. You’ll see what I do at the end of this post, hold up.
Importance of Search Engine Optimization in Blogging
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a key blogging strategy and plays a super important role in increasing your blog post visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs).
Conduct keyword research to identify the terms your target audience is searching for, and strategically incorporate these keywords into your content, meta tags, image alt text, and internal links.
Below is an image of a free keyword research tool, named the Ahrefs Keyword Generator. It can help you find keywords that can be relevant to the niche type you are going to create with your blog.
Optimizing your blog for search engines can significantly boost organic traffic and attract new website visitors.
Consistency and Editorial Calendar
Maintaining a consistent posting schedule is key to keeping your audience engaged and fostering their loyalty.
An editorial calendar can be an invaluable tool for planning and organizing your content in advance, ensuring a steady stream of high-quality posts that cater to your readers’ interests.
Before you even create your first blog post it’s a good idea to know where you want to go.
5. Promoting Your Blog
Social Media Platforms and Marketing
You can leverage the power of social media platforms to promote your latest blog posts and expand your reach.
Simply repurpose blog content and share it strategically on platforms like Facebook (Meta), Twitter (X), Instagram, Pinterest, and LinkedIn, making sure to tailor your approach to each of the social media sites’ unique audience and demographics.
Just throwing up your blog content directly can cause social media users to ignore what you are doing, so you have to be smarter.
Email Marketing
This is one of the most crucial things you can do as a blogger. You build an email list to nurture relationships with your readers and notify them of new posts, exclusive content, or special offers.
Use email marketing services like GetReponse, Mailchimp, or ConvertKit to manage your campaigns, track performance, and segment your audience for more targeted communication.
Guest Posting
Contribute a guest post to other blogs within your niche to tap into their SEO value, and established audience and build valuable backlinks to your own blog.
Guest blogging and posting not only exposes your content to a wider readership but also enhances your blog’s SEO and establishes you as a credible authority in your field.
Networking with Bloggers
Make sure to engage with bloggers in your niche by commenting on their posts, sharing their content, and exploring opportunities for collaboration.
Engaging with your audience can lead to building relationships and fostering a strong online community.
Building relationships within the blogging community can lead to valuable partnerships, increased exposure, and mutual support.
Using Analytics
Regularly monitor your blog’s performance using tools like Google Analytics.
You should look out for key metrics such as page views, bounce rate, time on page, and audience demographics to gain valuable insights into your readers’ behavior and preferences.
Utilize this data to refine your content strategy, create great blog content, optimize your promotional efforts, and make informed decisions to drive further growth.
6. Monetizing Your Blog Sites
Various Monetization Methods
Once you’ve built a loyal and engaged audience, you can look at different monetization strategies to make income from your blog.
A personal blog, a food blog, a lifestyle blog, etc. can all be monetized through affiliate marketing, sponsorships, or advertising:
Advertising: You can display relevant ads on your blog through networks like Google AdSense, Adsterra, Propellers Ads, etc, earning revenue based on impressions or clicks.
Affiliate Marketing: This is one of my favorites, you can partner with businesses and promote their products or services on your blog, earning a commission for each sale generated through your unique affiliate links.
Building and Engaging with Your Audience
The foundation of successful blog monetization lies in building a loyal and engaged audience.
Your blog’s focus should be on consistently delivering high-quality, valuable content that addresses your readers’ needs and interests.
Look to make meaningful interactions with your audience through comments, social media, email newsletters, and other channels to build trust and rapport.
The stronger your connection with your readers, the more likely they are to support your monetization efforts and invest in your offerings.
Legal Considerations
When monetizing your blog, it’s essential to adhere to all relevant legal requirements and regulations. Be transparent with your audience by disclosing any affiliate relationships or sponsored content.
Include a clear and comprehensive privacy policy and terms of service (like in the image below) on your blog to protect both you and your readers.
Consult with legal professionals if needed to ensure compliance and avoid any potential issues.
7. Challenges and Solutions in Blogging
Common Challenges Bloggers Face
Even the most successful bloggers encounter challenges along the way.
I’ve had a stack of them, so take some advice from the lessons I’ve learned.
Tips and Tools to Overcome These Challenges
Here are a few of the strategies I use for both my personal blogs and business blogs:
Idea Generation: F*CK writer’s block by using tools like Google Gemini, BuzzSumo, Answer the Public, and online forums to discover trending topics and questions within your niche. Use AI for brainstorming sessions, and mind mapping. Also, keeping a notebook handy for jotting down ideas is really helpful.
Time Management: Get familiar with productivity tools like Trello or Asana to organize your tasks, set deadlines, and streamline your workflow. Batching similar tasks, setting realistic goals, and prioritizing your most important activities can help you stay on track as a blog owner.
Technical Support: Seriously, invest in reliable hosting and security services to safeguard your blog and minimize downtime. Use plugins and tools that can automate maintenance tasks, enhance website performance, and improve the overall user experience.
Audience Building: Always promote each and every blog post through social media, email marketing, guest posting, and networking with other bloggers. Engage with your readers through comments, social media interactions, and email newsletters to foster a sense of community and loyalty.
Monetization Strategies: Experiment with different monetization methods to find the ones that work best with your audience and niche. A good idea is to diversify your income streams so you can create a more sustainable business model.
